Canon George Leyburn Richardson M.A., B.D., was born in at Worth Matravers, Dorset, son of Joseph G. Richardson, Rector of Middleton St. George. Sometime Mawson Scholar of Corpus Christi, Cambridge, and Battalion Chaplain to the Leicester Battalion, Peterborough Regiment, Church Lad’s Brigade. He wrote “The Church Lad’s Religion” in 1903 when he was rector at Holmfirth, Yorkshire. He married Edith M. Ellison in 1902. He was at Burton Latimer during the difficult years of the First World War and conducted several funeral services for soldiers who came home to die from wounds inflicted in battle and comforted dozens of families whose sons died overseas. He moved to Uppingham in 1920 but returned to take part in the Service of Dedication of the War Memorial in 1922. For most of the time he was here he served on the Parish Council.
