The building of St Nicholas Owen Roman Catholic Church in Kettering Road was started towards the end of 1970, completed in the summer of 1971 and was opened on 2 March 1972. (Click here for press report on the opening.) It had been four centuries since there was last a Catholic Church in Burton Latimer. Prior to the building of the new church Sunday Mass was held in the British Legion rooms for twenty-seven years. The connection with St Nicholas Owen is due to his building a priest’s hiding hole in Harrowden Hall, Great Harrowden. For further information on St Nicholas Owen click here. The building was designed to hold 100 people and as the town has grown so has the congregation and at present the attendance on Sundays is close to capacity. The original cost of the building was £13,000, the money being raised locally by parishioners arranging many fundraising events.
