Extract from Northampton Mercury Friday 23 August 1901

CHARGE AGAINST A CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY
Co-operative Society Store 1913 - Secretary Charles Stokes on left

The Burton Latimer Co-operative Society was summoned for selling bread other than by weight, at that place, on August 13.

Mr C Stokes, the secretary of the society, appeared for the defendant society.

Mr Mattinson deposed to purchasing a half-quartern loaf from a lad named Beeby, who was in charge of a cart belonging to the defendant society. On being weighed the loaf was found to be 2oz under proper weight, and at the present time was 4oz below weight. The lad had scales in the cart.

Mr Stokes admitted a technical offence, which was unintentional.

Mr Mattinson stated that he had received several complaints of the weight of bread sold by the society, and he must press the case.

The Chairman said they were bound to protect the public, and a fine of £1 and 6s costs would be imposed.
