Northamptonshire experienced the full force of a south-westerly gale, and traffic on several cross-country 'bus routes ceased in consequence of fallen trees. At Irthlingborough a cyclist escaped being crushed by a falling branch, which missed his head by inches and smashed the back wheel of his machine. A saloon motor-car was blown across the road and ran through a hedge into a shallow brook between Kettering and Walgrave. Near Burton Latimer a commercial van was blown over and the driver badly shaken. A powerful double-deck omnibus was blown to a standstill by a gust of wind near Wilby, and many drivers were unable to complete their journeys through the strain of holding the wheel steady owing to the side winds.
