Badgers Licences

1694 - 1709 & 1740 - 1743

1743 - 1751 & 1752 - 1772


There are 4 volumes of these books listing all persons granted a licence. The first volume gives the applicant's name, his home parish and the trade for which the licence is granted. Trades are carrier, jobber, maltster, oatmealman, higgler, drover, or badger. In the other volumes the licence applicants are listed as being bonded for £40 and two persons standing surety for them in the sum of £10. In 1765 the bonds are reduced to £10 and sureties to £5. Copies of  some licences are loose in Vol 4. Some additional entries can be found in the Quarter Sessions Minute book index for 1708 - 1728.

Following is a transcript from the first page of the 1743. At the end of the volume details of the different wording for each licence are as follows:-

Badger - Badger, Lader, Kidder, buyer & seller of all manner of corn or grain.

Higgler - buyer or seller of corn, grain, butter, cheese, hens, chickens, capons, eggs, fish and other dead victuals.

Drover - buyer and seller of all manner of cattle.

The persons whose names are hereunder written came Personally into Open Court And Acknowledged themselves Indebted unto our Sovereign Lord the King in the severall Sums of Money unto their respective Names annexed To be raised and Levyed on their severall and respective Goods and Chattells Lands and Tenements To the use of our Sovereign Lord the King his Heirs and Sucessors Upon the Condition hereunder written.

The condition of the above written Recognizance is such That whereas all and every the Drovers, Badgers, Laders, Kidders, Carriers, Buyers or Transporters of Corn, Grain, Butter, Cheese, Hens, Chickens, Capons, Eggs, Fish and other Dead Victualls hereunder named are on the day of the date hereof Allowed Admitted and Lycenced in open Court to those Offices or Doings respectively for the Space of One whole Year according to the Statutes in that case made. If therfore Drovers, Badgers, Laders, Kidders, Carryers, Buyers or Transporters of Corn, Grain, Butter, Cheese, Hens, Chickens, Capons, Eggs, Fish and other Dead Victualls shall not during the Continuance Forestall or Regrate or do anything Contrary to the true meaning of the Statutes made against Forestallers Regraters and Ingrossers or any thing therein Contained and shall well and truly Perform the Condition of such Lycences granted to them respectively at this Sessions as aforesaid. Then this Recognizance to be void or else to be and Remain against Every person failing herein and his respective Sureties in full Force Power and Vertue.
