|||
The election of a County Councillor for the Burton Latimer Division, rendered vacant by the death of the Hon and Rev Courtenay J Vernon, has resulted as follows:- CHARLES BARLOW (Liberal) …...............314 Thomas Jones (Conservative ….............236 Liberal majority ….................................. 78 As the late member was a Conservative, Mr Barlow's victory means the gain of a seat to the Liberals. The counting of the votes took place at the National Schools, Burton Latimer, on Tuesday night, under the superintendence of Mr H W K Markham, who was assisted by Mr W Fawkes, from the office of the clerk to the Council. Both candidates were present as were also Mr H Barlow (Kettering), Mr Frank Toseland (Kettering), and Mr F Barlow (Rothwell). There was not a single Conservative present to support Mr Jones. Mr Markham arrived with the Grafton Underwood box by nine o'clock, and was quickly followed by Mr Fawkes with the Burton Latimer papers. The counting was at once proceeded with, and in a short time it was found that out of nearly 600 electors 550 had polled. A good number of people assembled during the next half an hour, and by twenty minutes to ten the result was known. There were only three spoiled papers. When the result was announced there was a loud cheer, and the knot of people quickly dispersed. The figures at the first County Council election were:- Vernon (C) …............................262 Wallis (L) ….............................. 257 Majority …................................ 5 Whilst at the election early in the present year Mr Vernon was returned over the same opponent by a majority of 55. The Division included the parishes of Barton Seagrave, with 35 voters; Burton Latimer, 351 (these parishes polling at Burton); Cranford, 90; Grafton Underwood, 50; Weekley, 47; and Warkton, 47 (to poll at Grafton Underwood). The smaller villages have a combined total of 269, compared with 351 at Burton Latimer. THE NEW MEMBER MR CHARLES BARLOW is a farmer and grocer doing a big business in Burton Latimer. He is a son of the late Councillor Edward Barlow, of Rothwell, and brother of the present member of the County Council for that Division. He possesses the family characteristics of business aptitude, outspokenness, and an unflinching independence. He has served upon several public bodies in his own district, and he has gained a wide experience in the work of parochial and district affairs. His advice and assistance are much appreciated by those who serve on the same public bodies with him. He will make a capital County Councillor. He is the first new member of the County Council elected last March. |
