This picture of the old Burton mill on the River Ise - which was first printed in Down Memory Lane on January 29 - brought back memories for Dorothy Denton, 71, of Cedar Way, Wellingborough.
She knew the building well during her childhood, when it was a tannery belonging to brothers by the name of Groome. Her father, Arthur Denton, was foreman at the tannery and the young Dorothy often took him his lunch. She can remember the sight of the animal hides waiting to be tanned. Our picture shows the River Ise nearly bursting its banks, which Miss Denton says happened very frequently in winter, causing floods in nearby roads and fields. |
