JOS DOWNING ACCIDENT

Extract from the Northampton Mercury Saturday 4 May 1889

NARROW ESCAPE FROM DEATH

On Thursday, April 25, a very serious accident happened to Mr Joseph Downing, of this village. Mr Downing, who is a carpenter, was at work at one of the lodges upon the Burton wold, and while putting in a new window in the attic, the ladder upon which he was standing broke just under his feet, and he fell to the ground, a distance of some 30 feet. There happened to be at the foot of the ladder a stake hedge, and Downing fell on this, receiving a wound in his head from one of the stakes. This in some measure broke the fall, or he must have been killed on the spot.

He was afterwards conveyed home, and attended by Mr J L Price, where he lies in a very precarious condition.
