In the early 20th century before the First World War Tom Miller was a boxer of some repute locally, as the press cuttings from The Sporting Life below will testify. At the time of his boxing career he was working in the shoe industry and he probably found that the purse offered to the winners of these bouts brought in extra cash to help raise his large family.
