Varied Joys of Treat at Burton Latimer

About 250 old folk attended the annual Old Folk’s Treat at Burton Latimer on Thursday. As is usually the case, considerable interest attached to the annual competition for the oldest lady and gentleman present. These proved to be Mrs. John Barlow who is 88, and Mr. J. Burley, who is 86. The couple who had been married the longest time proved to be Mr. and Mrs. W. Goodman (60 years).

The proceedings opened with a free picture show at Burton Latimer Picture House, generously provided by Mr. A. Watts. The old folk then went to the Baptist Chapel where a service was conducted by the minister, Rev. A.A. McNaughton, the Rector of Burton Latimer, the Rev. R.W. Sharpley and the Rev. C.H. Ingram (superintendent minister of Kettering Central Methodist Circuit).

Tea followed in the Baptist Assembly Room and the men then enjoyed a smoking concert. Later came the principal item of the proceedings, a concert at which the artistes included Miss Audrey Larratt, Burton Carnival Queen (songs), Mr. C. Hickman (pianist), Dilys Doreen of the Gordon Ray Girls, London (songs and dances) Master H. Dicks (songs) and Mr. G. Morgan (songs).

Items of handbell ringing were also rendered by Mr. J. Saddington, Mr. B.T. Saddington. Mr. C. Hendry, Mr. J. Watson and Miss J. Saddington. The old folks also sang, Mr. W. Bazeley winning their singing competition.

Mrs. H. Haynes was in charge of the catering, and free transport was provided by the United Counties Omnibus Co.

Dances were given by Miss Skinner and Miss Ashby.
