Volunteers
We could not run the Museum or events without our wonderful volunteers who:
- supervise the museum during opening hours
- run small group visits to the museum
- help visitors with research
- keep the musuem clean and tidy
- carry out day to day maintenance
- transcribe old documents
- prepare and set up exhibitions
- manage the archives of artefacts and photographs
- plan and publicise events
- bake for events
- serve refreshments and run stalls at events
- research and lead walks
- research and give talks
- manage and produce material for the website
New volunteers are always welcomed – you do not have to have lived in the Town for a long time, nor be prepared to commit to a regular time slot.
As you can see, we need volunteers behind the scenes as well as in the Museum. Please join us!
Our volunteers turn their hands to anything!
We regularly welcome school and scout groups, giving them short talks and insights into the exhibitions
Volunteers ensure that the museum is kept clean and tidy for visitors
The Website
The original project which ran on a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund ended with the launch of the Society’s DVD in April 2007.
Work on the new website began in 2025, the bulk of that has mainly been copying the huge amount of content from the old website.
Many people have contacted us with new photos and information, and we have a backlog of new material to write and upload.
To ensure that the website continues to expand and include more features and stories, we still need volunteers Would you like to be one of them? We need people who would be interested in:
- Researching topics
- Interviewing people
- Collating information
- Writing and transcribing articles and stories for the site
- Scanning and preparing images for the web pages
- Producing the pages and linking them to make up completed sections
All we need from you is your time, your interest, and a willingness to learn new skills if you need to. Colleagues are here to support you. The website production group meets at the Heritage Museum, in the Harold Mason Centre on some Wednesday evenings from 6.00 – 8.00pm, although often we work from home.
If you are interested in getting involved contact us using the link on this page, or call in at the Heritage Museum- it is manned every Thursday and Saturday from 10.00 until 1.00 during exhibitions.
We look forward to hearing from you.
