During the Napolionic Wars the regular army was stationed abroad and the Militia became the force given the task of defending the coast and guarding prisoners of war sent back from the continent. Burton Latimer men who wished to volunteer went to Finedon to join the company raised by Sir William Dolben. Many served from 1803 to 1807, when it was disbanded and from a complement of 103, 35 men were from Burton Latimer. The table below, taken from documents at the County Record Office by Carolyn Smith shows their names, dates of birth where recorded, and rank.The columns after the rank indicate (YES or NO) whether the man was on the following returns: 1: 1803; 2; 1st Return 1804; 3: 2nd Return 1804; 4: 1805 and 1806. Promotions and resignations are also noted in these columns.
