RUSSIAN FLAGS - Favoured with fine weather on Saturday the young ladies and boys who undertook the selling of Russian Flags had a capital opportunity for their work. They principally worked in twos, making a house to house canvass with their emblems, and by the time for handing in their cash boxes at the Council Chamber, had achieved a really splendid day's work. The committee appointed (Messrs. A. Barratt, J. Boardman and H. Ayres), together with Mrs. Barratt, met the workers who counted up the coins. The gross amount was £12 5s. 6d.,made up as follows: - Cissie Williams and Pearl Potter £17s. 11½d.; Gladys Betteridge £1 5s. 7½d.; Kate Perkins and Gladys Basford £1 0s. 9½d.; Ivy Meads and Lily Hawkes 17s. 9d.; Edith Mason and Florrie Brown 16s. 5½d.; Walter Pearson 5s. 0½d.; Elizabeth Randall 14s. 8d.; Annie Campen and Avis Loak 14s. 1d.; Gertie Whiting and Nellie Sharp 13s.; Rose Looms and Cissie Evans 12s. 11d.; Edward Bailey 12s. 3d.; Evelyn Campen and Phyllis Knight 11s. 6½d.; Sadie Barratt 11s. 1d.; Nellie Bulley and Marjorie Dicks 9s. 2d.; Dorothy White and Hilda Turner 8s. 1d. Walter Clipson and Ernest Desborough 8s. 0½d.; Laura Panter 7s. 0½d. They were heartily thanked and congratulated on the splendid result; - all the collectors would be under 16 years of age. One young lady boldly pulled up a motor, and was rewarded with a florin. Another was much concerned about a farthing which crept into the box, and a third came across a "purchaser" who evidently thought it was the French Flag Day, for her box contained a French coin. The day had its humorous side and the girls had their fun. |
