Benfords barber's shop is featured here in the Shops section. The Benford family had been barbers in Burton Latimer since the 1930's and had owned shops in Finedon Street, High Street and Duke Street. The closure of the Duke Street shop was reported in the Kettering Evening Telegraph in March 1980.

"Doug Benford brushed down his final customer on Saturday in the barber's shop run by his family for nearly 50 years. But Doug will not be putting away his scissors for good. He plans to visit all his customers on foot and cut their hair in their own homes.

Doug, who lives a few doors away from the shop in Duke Street, said: "It will certainly seem strange not going to the shop every morning. But I shall end up the fittest man in Burton latimerwith all the walking I am going to do."

The shop was opened in 1932 by Doug's father who died in 1975. Doug's mother, Mrs Magerat Benford who lived over the shop, died in 1979. Doug said: "I didn't want to live at the shop so we will convert it back into an ordinary house and sell it."

The family had another barber's shop in the town's High Street for 21 years, but was demolished in 1967 to make way for the Health Centre."
