“A mixed farm, all store land, young stores are bought and sold off at 2 ½ - 3 years and heifers as downcalvers. More than half the farm is on Burton Wold and 259 acres has been requisitioned and a cottage; 151 acres remain of which 130 is arable. The flock of 200 ewes has had to be sold. The land is level and suited to arable cultivation mole draining was prevented by the requisitioning. The heavy grassland needs liming & slagging.
Under the heading: Has farmer grazing rights over land not occupied by him the answer states: "31 acres grass keeping J. Bennie April December taken because of W.D. requisition.”

“A flattish field which slopes to the brook and is liable to flooding. It has an open shed and is used for the grazing of trade horses. Since June 1941 the brook has been cleaned and straightened, and this has probably removed the liability of flooding.”

“A mixed farm, stores are bought and a few calves reared, sheep have been given up. It is store land mostly flat, hedges have been grubbed up for easier cultivations, clay quarrying is encroaching on one side of the farm and old ironstone cuttings cross the farm to its disadvantage. Arable and grassland alike need lime.”

“This is a mixed farm, a great part of it was in a bad condition when recently taken over by the present tenant who has energetically tackled ditches & hedges and improved the farm with better cultivations and until 184 acres the Glendon Lodge Farm was requisitioned by the War Department he was reclaiming derelict bush land. This work has now been postponed until its release by the W.D. Some basic slag is used on the grassland and basic slag and compounds used on the arable land.

“This is an arable farm with a dairy herd; milk is retailed in Burton Latimer. Some market garden produce is grown. Five Willow farmhouse has been divided into 2 cottages and does not now go with the Cranford holding. The Cranford holding of 35 acres is three miles from the Home Farm. It is divided by ironstone pits and adjoins and was similar to poor neglected land but is being improved with fertilizers and good tillage.”

“Mixed farm, milking 12 cows, with 144 acres out of 227 under the plough. The area includes 83 acres in the parish of Harrowden of which 40 acres is feeding land. It is a compact farm with buildings centrally situated but, with the increased arable, could do with a Dutch barn. The farm should have a cottage, but it is very difficult to obtain and keep labour on the land in this district.”

“This farm on Burton Wold is a part of the poorly farmed land requisitioned in a block of 1000 acres by the War Department. There is only a grass track from the main road to the farmhouse. It is flattish poor store land but with drainage, phosphates and suitable cultivations would be good wheat and bean land.”

“An almost flat farm of store quality on the edge of a poorly farmed block of land on Burton Wold. A small quantity of milk is produced. An ironstone company is working on the property. With the adjoining farms it was requisitioned by the War Department, but has been famed at Tenant’s risk. De-requisitioned in July 1943, the ironstone company is making rapid progress, and will have taken in the whole farm by the autumn of 1943.”
