Before the Industrial Revolution occurred in roughly the hundred-year period between 1750 and 1850, the majority of the local population was engaged in work related to agriculture. As our research into the migration of the Burton population between 1850 and 1880 shows, when comparing the various occupations of the working population, even in the early 1880s the largest employed section of Burton townsfolk still worked on the land.

The village and early town had a number of farms very close to the centre.
