  • 26.09.2010 - The Street Names of Burton in the History section has been updated.
  • 23.09.2010 - The Agriculture section has a new feature on the Allotments of Burton Latimer. The Education section has the reprodution of a report on a Council School Variety Show in 1947, including many names.
  • 15.09.2010 - Thanks to a donation from Diane Garbett (nee York) a new Council Junior School class photo from 1973 has been added.
  • 26.08.2010 - The Pubs & Clubs section has a feature on the Liberal Club. A general introduction to the pubs and clubs of Burton has also been added. The Sport & Leisure section carries updates of several football team photos.

  • 09.06.2010 - Thanks to Shannon Hindwood, various missing names have been completed on the class photo of Miss Rogers' Class in 2000-1 at Meadowside Junior School and Mrs Hardwick's Class in 2001-2 at Meadowside Infants.

  • 23.05.2010 - Andrew Hudson has supplied some extra names and corrections to class photos of Mrs Smith's classes at Meadowside Juniors in the 1970s.
  • 23.05.2010 - Thanks to Stewart Greenaway, various class photos from Meadowside Infants School in the 1980s have been updated with missing names. The Agriculture section has two new features on farms.
  • 16.05.2010 - Thanks to Judith Keach (nee Farmer), Sharon Chambers (nee Glithero), and Rob Taylor, various class photos have been updated with missing names.
  • 06.05.2010 - The Sport & Leisure section has a major new feature on the history of Gala/Parade Days in Burton, with photogalleries and listings of Gala Queens and Attendants. The Agriculture section now has several new and updated features on various farms and smallholdings.
  • 26.04.2010 - Thanks to Andrew wright, Schooldays Gallery 2 has been updated with new names, and several class photos have also been updated.
  • 15.04.2010 - The site map and the databases for the site search engine have been updated to include all amendments and additions to the site made since January 1st.
  • 15.04.2010 - There have been further revisions of the class photo section of the site. We are very grateful to Melanie Pirie (nee Devine) for naming most of the children on a previously blank 1958 Council Infants class, and to Alan Francis for helping us revise the year order of a couple of class photos from St Mary's Junior School.
  • 08.04.2010 - Thanks again to Alan Francis, the last three missing names on a 1961-2 class photo of St Mary's Junior School have now been completed.
  • 01.04.2010 - There are two new major features in the Industry section. The story of Alumasc is now covered, accompanied by Sue Humphrey's memories of working in the office there in the 1970s. The section on the clothing industry now has the story of Hart & Levy's, also accompanied by a personal account of working life there - this time from Godfrey Bigley.
  • 30.03.2010 - Alan Francis has kindly supplied all the missing names on the 1956-7 class photo mentioned below.
  • 29.03.2010 - Thanks to Joan Linnitt (nee Payne) a class photo from St Mary's - originally donated as c.1958, and possibly a Junior School photo - has been accurately dated as an Infants School photo from 1956-7, and two further names have been added.
  • 25.03.2010 - Thanks again to Joely Hanney, nearly all the names have been filled in for the class photo of Meadowside Junior School Class 5Y in 2000-1. The page on Burton's ironstone mining now carries a link to Alan Pack's site on the history of Irthlingborough's mine.
  • 20.03.2010 - Thanks to Joely Hanney, all the names but one have been filled in for the class photo of Meadowside Junior School Class 5G in 2000-1.
  • 12.03.2010 - Gaye Elliott (nee Gregory) has sent in an account of her short time in Burton in the mid-1950s. It is now available in the Education section.
  • 04.03.2010 - The Agriculture section now has items on two farms which occupied part of the Wold: Talbutt's Farm and Wold Farm.

  • 25.02.2010 - Because of a change of location for the museum in the near future, the Society is conducting a survey on its future role and the services it provides. Members will be balloted shortly, but for site visitors who are not members but who have taken an interest in this site and the work of the Society, and would like a chance to contribute to the debate, a web version of the form is available for download and return as an e-mail attachment. Click here for more details. This is your chance to give help shape the future of the Society! Responses by March 20th please.
  • 25.02.2010 - The Agriculture section now has items on Home/Rectory Farm in Kettering Road and The Laurels Farm in Church Street. Another new class photo from the Council Junior School in the 1950s has been added. The Pubs & Clubs section has new photos in the features on The Britannia Club and the Conservative Club.
  • 21.02.2010 - Thanks to Karon Coles (nee Osborne), more names have been added to the class photo of Mrs Tajzler's 1971 class at St Mary's Infants.
  • 19.02.2010 - Thanks to Ron Carter, the feature on Banger Racing in the Sport & Leisure section has a photo of the Cranford Road site.
  • 18.02.2010 - The History section has a brief report of the General Election of 1906 and the result for Burton Latimer. The Sport & Leisure section has an item on the Children's & Youth Council. The Agriculture section now has an item on Eady's Farm in the High Street.
  • 16.02.2010 - Thanks to Beccy Carter and her father Ron, more names have been added to existing class photos from the Church School Juniors and Meadowside Infants, and through their kind generosity a new class photo from Meadowside Infants is also now available. The page on fixing the dates of the school years has also been updated.
  • 12.02.2010 - Thanks to Caroline Mitchell (nee Pearson) the final names have been completed and the year confirmed for Mrs Watson's 1963 Class at the Council Infants School. See this and other class photos from the last century and the early years of this one.

  • 02.01.2010 - Thanks to the combined efforts of several members of the Gazeley family, a considerable number of names have been added to various class photos from the 1950s and 60s from St Mary's Junior School and the Council Infants School.
  • 01.01.2010 - Tony Palmer has submitted a short article on his time at the County Infants School in the 1940s. The index to the Education section has also been reorganised in order to group information more logically and to enable easier access to the very popular features on class photos and memories of schooldays.
  • 31.12.2009 - A photo of the row of shops in the High Street including the Chip Shop has been captured from a cine film taken in the 1960s and has been added to section B in the Retail section.
  • 23.12.2009 - The "Changing Face of the High Street" series in the History section has a new addition - a feature on Nichol's Yard/Cooper's Yard.
  • 22.12.2009 - Thanks to Steve Cheney, more missing names have been supplied for the Council and Infants Schools class photos from the 1960s.
  • 20.12.2009 - Thanks to more assistance from Teresa Simpson (nee Rees), four of the class photos from St Mary's School have been accurately dated, and more missing names have been supplied.
  • 17.12.2009 - The Agriculture section now has in item on Hilly Farm - the first of what will be a series articles and photo-features on the Farms, Lodges & Smallholdings of Burton Latimer.
  • 13.12.2009 - Thanks to Kieran Harmon, four class photos from Meadowside Infants School in the 1980s have been updated with additional names and - in two cases - corrected dates.
  • 09.12.2009 - The page on the Waggon & Horses in the Pubs & Clubs section has been updated, to include developments there in 2008/9.
  • 08.12.2009 - Trevor Cooper's account of school life in the 1950s is now available in the Education section
  • 07.12.2009 - Teresa Simpson (nee Rees) has supplied even more missing names and details on a number of St Mary's Junior School in the early 1960s, and these updates are available in the Education section. With Teresa's help, we have successfully completed all the missing names on some of the photos, and have confirmed most of the years where they were in doubt.
  • 05.12.2009 - The eleventh Photogallery in the Schooldays part of the Education section is now online.
  • 03.12.2009 - Thanks to a loan from Teresa Simpson (nee Rees), three new class photos of St Mary's Junior School in the early 1960s are now available in the Education section. Teresa has also supplied a number of missing names and details on a number of other photos, and these have also been updated.
  • 30.11.2009 - Updates have been applied to several sections in the Shops features of the Retail section, to track current changes in activity, owners and usage.
  • 28.11.2009 - More photos for the Council Junior School in the 1940s and Meadowside Junior School in the 2000s are now online in the Education section.
  • 27.11.2009 - Thanks to a kind donation of photos from John Byland, the feature on the Early Days of the Cranford Road Estate in the History section has had a further update.
  • 21.11.2009 - Janet Meads Jr has kindly supplied a series of class and general photos of Meadowside School in the 1970s, 1990s and 2000s, and the first of these are now online in the Education section. Thanks to information and suggestions from various other e-mails, other photos in this section have also been updated with names or dates.
  • 19.11.2009 - Thanks to an e-mail from Michael Bodsworth, more missing names have been filled in on the whole-school photo of St Mary's Infants from 1981-2 in the Education section. His wife Jodie has also kindly supplied many names for Mrs Pearson's Class of 1983 at Meadowside Infants.
  • 18.11.2009 - Thanks to Michael Lewis and Mike Christian, more missing names have been filled in in photos from Council School Infants, Juniors and Meadowside Infants class photos in the Education section.
  • 16.11.2009 - The Street Names page in the History section has been updated to cover recent developments. New links have been added to relevant pages elsewhere on the site,
  • 15.11.2009 - Andrew Woodlands has completed the missing names for the photo of Mr Pringle's Class in the school year 1969-70.
  • 13.11.2009 - The site map and the databases for the site search engine have been updated to include all pages on the site added since October 18th.
  • 12.11.2009 - The tenth Photogallery in the Schooldays part of the Education section is now online. The item on memories of Council schools in the 1950s has also been updated with additional photos and text.
  • 11.11.2009 - The page on the Dukes Arms in the Pubs & Clubs section has been updated, thanks to Mike Thornton who supplied details and a photo of his parents' tenure there in the 1940s/50s.
  • 10.11.2009 - Courtesy of Michael Lack and John Byland, two photos have been added to the feature on the Early Days of the Cranford Road Estate in the History section, plus a short explanation of the Orlit houses has been added. Links to other relevant pages have also been included.
  • 08.11.2009 - The last two of the class photos the Society currently holds for St Mary's Infants and Junior Schools are now on-line, together with an update of another one. We are now dependent on visitors and friends to supply further pictures for St Mary's and East Lea Schools. If you have any we don't currently have, please consider sharing them (we can scan them for you and return them safely if you don't have a scanner). This is now the only way further class photos from these schools will appear online.
  • 06.11.2009 - The ninth Photogallery in the Schooldays part of the Education section is now online. The Reminiscence Page has also been updated, thanks to a good contribution from David Brown.
  • 28.10.2009 - Six new class photos for St Mary's Junior School in the 1950s and 1960s have been added to the Education section. Several other pages have been updated in the light of new information.
  • 28.10.2009 - Thanks to Nick Meads and David Brown, many names have been supplied to two of the entries in the Schooldays Photogalleries.

  • 22.10.2009 - The Churches, Chapels & Charities section has a transcription of a newspaper report on a 1950 Baptist Church Fundraising Bazaar. The Education section has an article on life at St Mary's Infants School in the late 19th century.
  • 18.10.2009 - The seventh Photogallery in the Schooldays part of the Education section is now online. The site map and the databases for the site search engine have been updated to include all pages on the site added since September 24th.
  • 16.10.2009 - Four new class photos for St Mary's Junior School in the 1950s have been added to the Education section. The years of some previously published photos have also been adjusted in the light of new dating of some of the class photos.

  • 10.10.2009 - Thanks to a loan of materials and information from Dawn Chapman (nee Tailby), four new class photos for St Mary's Junior School in the period 1962-5 have been added to the archive and are now available on-line.
  • 09.10.2009 - Thanks to Ivan Gazeley, the complete list of names is now available for a school photo of Mr Pringle's class at St Mary's Junior School, and the year has been confirmed as 1959-60.
  • 08.10.2009 - The Churches, Chapels & Charities section has two articles on Rev. Fred Payne - one written by his nephew Michael Lack, and also a feature on a distribution of money to charities in 1973. The Sport & Leisure section has an item on the re-opening of the footbridge to Isham in the 1990s. The War section has Wynne Malpass' account of her evacuation to Burton. Thanks to Rob Jolley, almost a dozen names have been added to the school photo of Mrs Pearson's class at Meadowside Infants in 1974.

  • 04.10.2009 - Seven new class photos for St Mary's Junior School have been added to the Education section. The photos include a one early shot, but the majority are from the 1950s.
  • 01.10.2009 - The fifth Photogallery in the Schooldays part of the Education section has now been launched.
  • 27.09.2009 - Six new class photos for St Mary's Junior School have been added to the Education section. The photos include a number of very early shots. The information on several other class photos which were already online have been amended in the light of new information.

  • 03.09.2009 - The Schooldays part of the Education section now has the first of the galleries of school photos which go beyond formal class photos.
  • 02.09.2009 - The War section carries the memories of Brian Laven on being evacuated to Burton 70 years ago on the outbreak of the Second World War. Brian kindly e-mailed the Society an account of his time in Burton. The Pubs & Clubs section now has a large feature on the Britannia Working Men's Club. The Emergency & Welfare Services section has updated its feature on Dr Warner.
  • 01.09.2009 - Congratulations to Jazmin Morby on achieving an A* grade for Geography. Her coursework project on "My Place" featured the history and development of Burton. Jazmin approached the Society for relevant maps and also made use of this site and the Society's DVD as reference materials to underpin her project. The Society is always pleased to be of assistance for educational work of this kind.
  • 23.08.2009 - Thanks Amy Rose who has e-mailed in many missing names, two Meadowside Junior School pages from 2000-1 have been updated in the Education section.
  • 19.08.2009 - The Education section has a whole new sub-section, which we hope will become increasingly popular to match the success of the Class Photos sub-section: Schooldays. This section will record people's memories of schooldays and present a gallery of the Society's archive of school images other than formal class photos - playground activities, pantomime, exhibitions and so on. We would be grateful if people would contribute their own memories, however small. To start the collection off, there is an extensive article on memories of schooldays at the two Council Schools in the 1950s. The War section carries a new feature on the memories of the Muir family on their being evacuated to Burton during World War II.

  • 15.08.2009 - The Education section has six new class photos from the Council Junior School one from the Council Infants, and one from the Church Infants. Thanks to people who have e-mailed in some missing names, two Council School pages have been updated. Our grateful thanks also go to those who have contributed new photos.
  • 12.08.2009 - Four new inventories have been added to the Burton Wills page in the Genealogy section.
  • 05.08.2009 - The Education section has five new class photos from various schools. The Genealogy section carries three new wills. The Health & Welfare section has an amendment to the page on Dr Warner. The People & Families section has two new features offered by people outside the Society: the story of Sisters Annie and Valerie Smith, and an obituary article on Walter Summerfield, a prominent local social worker. The Transport section's feature on the Burton Station has also been updated.
  • 29.07.2009 - The History section has a new feature on the proposal in 1987 for the demolition of the Orlit homes built in Spinney Road after the Second World War.
  • 15.07.2009 - The Education section has three more class photos from Meadowside School and one from St Mary's. The Genealogy section now carries the 1849 Whellan's Directory entries for Burton. The War section has an article on Bill Joyce's memories of the Second World War
  • 25.06.2009 - The Transport section has a new feature on Gilliatt's Taxi Service. The feature on the Building of Burton's bypass has also been updated. The Education section has another class photo from Meadowside School.
  • 25.06.2009 - The Genealogy section now carries the 1898 Kelly's Directory entries for Burton. The Education section has more class photos from St Mary's : Infants School c.1900; Junior School 1947-48.
  • 18.06.2009 - The Property section has new items on the sales of The Limes and Ashwell House in the 1980s, plus an article on Latimer Mobile Homes. The index page has also been reorganised to group the information more logically, and also to give easier access to the transcriptions of the Manor Court Rolls.

Each page has a new grey textured background, and the BLHS button at the top of every page will take visitors back to the main index, without the need to scroll to the other button at the bottom of the page. To accompany the new design, new features are also available. The Property section has a new feature on Burton Latimer Hall; the Transport section has a page on Joyce Bros; and the Pubs and Clubs section has extended features on The Horse & Groom, The Thatcher's Arms, The Red Cow Inn, and The Waterloo Victory Inn.
